A canoe is a narrow boat, propelled by one or more people using paddles. Canoeing can be anything from a leisurely means of exploring the inland waterways to a full blooded Olympic sport combining stamina, and skill, full of excitement.

Popularity
Canoeing is a very popular pastime, especially with the young, as it is the least expensive way of taking to the water, and is more easily supervised when instructing beginners. Canoes are also popular because of ease of storing and transporting.

Location
For the person who takes to the water for the pure fun of being on the water or to explore our waterways, rivers, canals and close to shore sea are the venues. Specialized canoeing disciplines need specialized types of water.

Ability
Although canoeing looks easy, tuition should always be sought by a beginner, and this must be given by a qualified instructor. The ability to swim and feel confident in the water are a priority before attempting canoeing.

Closely Related Activities
Activities involving canoeing are, Canoe Slalom, Canoe Racing, Wild or White water Racing, Canoe Polo, Canoe Sailing. Closely related activities are, Rowing, Sailing, Dragon boat racing, Exploring the canals and inland waterways.

Cost
A new general purpose canoe can be purchased for around £150, added to this is the necessary safety equipment of helmet and life jacket of which you should never scrimp as your life could depend on it. By joining a club that owns equipment the costs to the individual can be drastically reduced, and you as an individual have the fun and camaraderie of canoeing with friends of similar canoeing experience. Canoes can be easily home made in glass fibre reducing the costs further, (moulds are hired).
