French Cricket is something of an anomaly for it neither originates from France nor resembles Cricket. French Cricket is a social game, using a bat and ball, played by a group of any age of players usually on a grassy space or sandy beach.

Popularity
French cricket is popularly played at family and social outdoor gatherings, as it can be started quite spontaneously with very little equipment, including all who want to play.

Location
French Cricket can be played in the back garden, a local park or sandy beach, a sandy beach being best as it is the easiest on which to mark out the playing area.

Age
French Cricket is a social game that can be played by any number of players, of any or mixed ages, making it an ideal family game that is spontaneous to start with flexible rules and great fun for all to play.

Ability
French Cricket is a great leveler of abilities, the agility and lack of size of the young against the experiance and cunning of the more aged.

Description
The playing area depends on the area available and the age and fitness of the players, and has a batting circle of two strides circumference in the middle. the batsman takes up position in the circle, the bowling target being the batsman's legs. The batsman must not move his legs, defending his legs by twisting his upper torso. the first ball is bowled from approximately six strides from the batsman, there after from wherever the ball is fielded, by the fielder who has the ball.

Dedication
Runs are scored by the batsman hitting the ball outside his circle. Singles are scored by the batsman passing the bat completely around his body, four runs are scores if the ball is hit outside the playing area. A batsman is out if his legs are hit by the ball or he is caught by a fielder or if he moves his legs. The fielder who gets a batsman out takes bat. If a batsman is out for moving his legs the fielder who has been longest since batting takes bat.

Closely Related Activities
French Cricket is similar to many social bat and ball games especially as the rules are flexible to suit the individual event. Closest being Tip and run, Six and out and rounders.

Cost
As ball games go French Cricket must be one of the cheapest to play, needing just an old cricket bat and tennis ball. There are no club or ground fees to pay, nor is any special clothing necessary. Idealy the bat should be a suitable size for the smallest player.
