Amateur rocketry spans a range from model rockets that can be bought at the local hobby store, to advanced rockets, built by serious amateur rocketry groups, the best of which can reach heights approaching the threshold of space (100km).

Popularity
Model rocketry came to prominance in the 1950's encouraged by the wave of interest in the then new space age. High power rocketry has since grown to become a booming hobby for adults with numerous clubs and regular rocket meets.

Age
Rocketry is a hobby popular with both adults and young people of both sexes, and has been credited as the most significant source of inspiration for children who eventually become scientists and engineers.

Ability
participants in the more advanced levels of rocketry require training and skills to deal with the dangers and complexities of building ones own rocket, solid rocket motors as well as liquid fuel engines and hybrids of solid and liquid propellents.

Description
A model rocket is a small rocket capable of being launched by anybody, to generally low altitudes (usually to around 100-500 m (300-1500 ft) for a 30 g (1 oz.) model) which is normally recoverable.

Dedication
The Model Rocket Safety Code should be memorised, a copy is provided with most model rocket kits and motors. Despite its inherent association with extremely flammable substances and pointed objects that travel at very high speeds, model rocketry historically has proven to be a very safe hobby.

Potential
There are many challenges and contests around the world for which rocketeers can compete. most altitude related, and most with cash rewards.
