Quilling or paper filigree is a craft or art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs, depicting flowers, leaves, and various patterns similar to that of ornate ironwork.
Popularity
Quilling originated as a pastime in the renaissance period,loosing favour in the second half of the 20th centuary, but seeing a big reassurgance in recent years. Often being associated with other pastimes such as Scrap-booking and Papercraft.
Age
Quilling is an absorbing lifelong pastime, for anyone from around the age of five years and upwards.
Ability
Part of the charm of Quilling is that basic quilling is so easy to learn. More ambitious creations however, such as floral and animal pictures, and complex scenes, are produced with artistic vision and after many experiments and much practise.
Description
To quill, take a strip of paper and wrap it tightly around a stick-like object until you reach the end of the strip.
Removed from the stick. Maintain the shape by glueing the end, or release the tight circle slightly to create a looser circle.
Other shapes can be produced by pinching the basic circle.
The tight circles are perfect for flower centers. Leaves and other shapes are formed through pinching. These shapes include teardrop, marquise, half-circle, scrolls, and fringed flowers.

Quilling originaly gained its name from the practise of winding paper around a quill to create the basic coil shape. other items such as toothpicks and needles can be used even your own finger. There are nowadays, specially designed inexpensive slotted tools which are available and commonly used.
