Ski cross (also known as skiercross or skier-X). A timed racing skiing competition. Competed in KO round format by individuals in racing groups of four, who race over naturally occurring terrain and artificial features like jumps, rollers and banks.

Popularity
Although a relitivly new ski sport, Ski Cross has gained rapid popularity, a trent which still continues. Ski Cross is now included as a disapline in Freestyle Skiing events.

Location
Ski Cross is governed by the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) and all courses need to meet their specified requirements.

Age
Ski Cross is competed by both men and women, but not together, or against each other. Both events use the same course.

Ability
Competitive Ski Cross should only be attempted by extremly fit and experianced skiiers, as a Ski Cross race requires skill, strength, and physical endurance. Skiiers can reach speeds of 65 mph and spend up to 25% of their racing time airborne.

Description
The first round of a race is a time trial or qualification round, every competitor skis down the course, which is built to encompass both naturally occurring terrain and artificial features. After a first round time trial, the fastest 16 women or 32 men compete in a knockout style series of rounds.In which groups of four skiers start simultaneously, the first two to cross the finish line advance to the next round. The final 8 places are determined by a final and small final.

Dedication
The course is constructed of features such as traverses, flats, rolls. banks, moguls, and jumps of various heights and difficulties, all connected with turns.

The racing length is between 800 to 1200 m with vertical drop of 150 to 250 m over the course. 50% of the course must be turns of varying size and speeds spaced between the other features.
Features, 25% of the course must be traverses, moguls, banks etc. 25% of the course will be jumps of between 1 to 4 m high.

Potential
Although Ski Cross has been an international sport for several years, it only made its Olympic début at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
