(No longer played) Paille-Maille or Pall-Mall was a ball and mallet lawn game commonly played in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the precursor to the game we now know of as Croquet.
Location
Paille-maille and its derivatives were popularly played in Italy, France, Scotland, England and other parts of Western Europe.
Description
Paille-Maille was played in a long lawned alley with an iron hoop suspended over the ground at the end. The object was to strike a wooden ball of about 1 foot (30 cm) in circumference with a heavy wooden mallet, down the alley and through the hoop with the fewest number of hits possible. It differed from trucco in the greater length of playing area, suggesting a closer relationship to golf than other ground billiard type pastimes.
Dedication
When Paille-Maille fell out of fashion, some of the alleys evolved into shopping areas or prominades. eg Londons Pall-Mall and the Mall, Hamburgs Palmaille, Paris`s Rue du Mail, Utrechts Maliebaan, and in North America shopping centres are known as shopping Malls.
