Pole dancing is a form of performing art, a combination of dancing and gymnastics. It involves dancing with a fixed vertical pole.
Popularity
In recent years pole dancing has caught on as a new and increasingly popular form of exercise, in which a verticle pole is used as a workout prop.
Location
Pole dancing as a performing art, competitive sport or form of exercise should not be confused with the somewhat sleazy night club image, with which it bears little resemblance. Pole dancing as a form of exercise, is more gymnastic and non-erotic.
Age
Pole dancing is a solo activity, which can be performed by either sex of any age. But is predominated by woman.
Ability
Pole dancing requires significant strength, flexibility and endurance, needing upper body and core strength to be proficient, which takes time and much practise to develop.
Description
Novice dancers may simply use the pole as a form of balance, as they become more proficent they use it to perform more athletic moves such as climbs, spins, and body inversions. Pole dancing moves are acheived by using the body itself as resistance.
Dedication
Individual Pole dance moves are best learnt by watching the move being performed. This may be achieved by attending a Pole dance class, going to a Pole dancing performance or viewing one of the many video tutorials available. Once you have mastered the basic poses you will quickly be able to choreograph your own routine, to match your ability.
