Pea shooting is a traditional mischievous schoolboy game of shooting peas, dried peas or screwed up paper, out of a tube (pea shooter). The pea shooter is operated by placing the pea in to the tube and then blowing through it sharply.
Popularity
A novelty sport has developed around pea shooting, in which peas are shot into a target, similar to that used in archery.
Location
The traditional schoolyard pastime of peashooting has been largely banned in the UK due to modern day health and safety rules.
A competition hailed as `The World Pea Shooting Championships` is held annually in the village of Witcham, England.
Age
Children of any age enjoy the challenge of peashooting, including the age range of 5 years old untill 80 years of age. (Anyone with a sense of fun and a bit of puff).
Ability
A good pea shooter needs a steady hand, plenty of puff and the right sized ammunition for the tube.
Peashooters were traditionaly made from the hollow stem of the commonly found hedgerow plant Cowparsley.
Description
The competitive sport of peashooting;
* Is competed over a 12 ft distance.
* Uses a archery style target covered in a soft substance, such as putty, so that the peas will stick into it or at least make indentations that easily identify the location of the hit.
* Scoreing as in archery.
* Peashooters can be made from any material but must be entirely lung powered.
