The Woodcraft Folk is a youth organisation for boys and girls. Set up with the Aim to educate and empower children and young people with the ablity to participate actively in society, improving their lives and of others through active citizenship.
Popularity
There are currently about 400 Woodcraft groups meeting around the country, mainly in urban areas, but increasingly more are in rural areas.
Age
Woodcraft groups are divided by age; Under sixes are known as Woodchips. / Six to nine year olds are known as Elfins. / Ten to twelve year olds are Pioneers. / Thirteen to fifteen year olds are Venturers. / DFs ( District Fellows) Sixteen to twenty.
Ability
Woodcraft Folk groups are run co-operatively, with children, young people and adults working together. Woodcraft encourages children and young people to get involved in the running of The Woodcraft Folk by contributing ideas and joining committees.
Description
Group nights usually last between one and two hours, depending on the age of the children or young people. They are run by adult volunteers, parents and young people. Children contribute their ideas and are encouraged to make suggestions for activities, camps and group trips. weekly groups play games, sing, take part in drama, discussions, projects and crafts, and learn about local and global issues in a fun, entertaining way.
Dedication
Ocassionally talking about issues at levels that match the age of the children and young people, to help them explore the world around them. This could be something to do with the environment, or why an election is important and what the different parties stand for. They also organise camping and hostelling weekends throughout the year. Camping is a large focus of the summer holidays, with Woodcraft Folk groups from across a town, region or the whole UK coming together for summer camps.
Potential
Many of The Woodcraft Folk young people join international camps and exchanges.
Voluntary Work
Woodcraft Folk runs on the passion and energy of thousands of volunteers, most of whom help at a local Woodcraft Folk groups and who may have been in Woodcraft Folk as children, or whose own children may attend a group.
