Snakes and Ladders is a board race game of chance for two or more players.
A number gridded board is navigated by the shake of a dice, aided by ladders and hindered by snakes. The first player to complete the grid, being the winner.
Popularity
The game of Snakes and Ladders originated in India, where this historic version was played as a lesson in morality. The player's progression up the board represented life’s journey, complicated by virtues (ladders) and vices (snakes).
Location
The original Indian version of the game was known as moksha pAtam, vaikunthapaali or paramapada sopaanam. And in America it is known as Chutes and Ladders.
Age
An ideal family or mixed age game, which is suitable for 3 year olds upwards.
Ability
Basic counting is the only skill required, a very simple to learn and easy to play game, making it very popular with young children.
Description
Each player starts with a coloured counter on the number 1 square, takeing turns to roll a single dice, their counter is moved by the number indicated by the dice roll. Counters follow the numbered route marked on the gameboard. If, on completion of a move, a player's counter lands on the bottam of a ladder, the player moves his counter up to the ladders top. If he lands on a snakes head he must move his token down to the snakes tail.
Dedication
A player must roll the exact number to reach the final winning square, if the roll of the dice is too large the counter remains where it is.
If a player rolls a 6, he may, after moving his counter, immediately take another turn.
