Yagli Gures also known as Oil or Grease Wrestling is the national sport of Turkey, It is so called because the wrestlers douse themselves with olive oil.
Popularity
Yagli Gures pronounced (yaw-luh gresh), originated amongst the renowned Janissariesan, which were an elite body of guards to the imperial Sultans of the Ottoman Empire.
Location
Held since 1362, the annual Kirkpinar tournament is the oldest continuously running, sanctioned sporting competition in the world.
In modern times Yagli Gures is competed in Turkey (where it is the national sport), Greece, Holland and Japan.
Description
Wearing special leather hand-stitched lederhosen called a kisbet which traditionally was made of water buffalo hide, more recently is made of calfskin, doused in olive oil to make it harder to grip one's opponent.
Yagli Gures contests last 30 minutes! If after this time there is no winner, the contest is decided in a sudden death overtime. There are few forbidden holds, and grabbing of trunks is not off limits.
