Road Bowls is predominantly an Irish sport in which competitors attempt to take the fewest number throws to propel a metal ball along a predetermined course of country roads.
Popularity
Today Road Bowling is mainly played in the Irish Counties of Armagh and Cork. History however suggests the sport was once far more widespread being played in Scotland, the north of England and in North America.
Description
The "bowl" also known as the "bullet" is an iron cannonball of 3 inches in diameter and weighing 28 ounces. Matches are contested between two or more players or teams. The team that requires the fewest shots to reach the finish line wins. If two players or teams approach the finish line with equal shots, the winner is decided by which throw goes farther past the finish line.
Dedication
Historically players were given twenty shots (a score) each, the winner determined by who went the greatest distance. The modern game is competed over a fixed distance in the fewest shots. The expression "score" for a match survives.
