Modern Pentathlon is a combination team and individual sport for both men and women combining fencing, swimming, shooting, cross country running and horse riding competed in that order, competitions are held over either three or four days.
Popularity
Modern Pentathlon competitions are not as common as competitions for the individual disciplines, largely because of the time involved and also the difficulties in staging such an event
Age
A certain maturity is necessary as the five individual disciplines all have to be mastered before attempting the modern pentathlon also the stamina to compete over three or four days must be achieved.
Ability
Modern Pentathlon is governed by by the rules of the Union Internationale du Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon, and of the governing bodies of the five disciplines involved.
Description
In both individual and team competitions points are awarded for competitors performances in all five disciplines and added together for an overall score, competitors must take part in all five disciplines. Fencing using Epees. A freestyle swimming race of 300m for men 200m for women. Shooting using .22 pistols at a 25m distance. Cross country run over 4km course for the men, 2km course for women. In the riding event, the horses are provided, the course is 600m long with fifteen obstacles.
Potential
National, International and world championships, and for the men only the Olympic Games.

Cost
