The basic technique used is to cut alternate slanting blows into the log so that large wedges of wood are loosened leaving a wide cutting surface, in which to cut right through the log.

A competitive axeman must be overall fit with extremely powerful shoulders. The sport is a very technical one, as correct cutting style, rhythm of the axe and power must all be harmonised for success, this is only achieved by much and regular practise.
