Bodybuilding is defined as the process of developing all muscle groups through the combined process of weight training, increased calorie intake via food and nutritional supplements, plus periods of rest.

Arnold Schwarzenegger increased the popularity of bodybuilding with his film Pumping Iron, which also starred Lou Ferigno - better known as The Incredible Hulk. Very popular with men and also women who want to get fit and get a good physique.

Bodybuilding can be done at home, but most people will indulge at a gymnasium as that is where the best equipment can be found. This gives the person the possibility to use a variety of different weights and equipment.

It is recommended that persons who want to start bodybuilding are of at least 16 years of age. Many gymnasiums will not allow persons under 16 years to participate in weight training activities

A bodybuilders size and shape are far more important than how much he or she can lift. In fact, for muscle definition it is recommended to work with lower weights and more repetition.

You have decided to start bodybuilding. So you have your own expectations of how it will be and what you will get. May be your primary goal is just to get rid of unwanted fat to look more attractive and younger? Or you are interested in competitive bodybuilding? The sport of bodybuilding is good for everybody.

In competitive bodybuilding, bodybuilders (both men and women) try to develop their body to attain an aesthetically pleasing body and balanced physique. This would be judged by recognised bodybuilding standards. Competitors show off their bodies by performing a series of poses which are to accentuate a particular muscle group - bodybuilders spend time practicing their posing routine as this has a large effect on how they are judged. Dedicated training is require to produce the desired results.

From the beginnings of a weight training routine, bodybuilders may continue onto the Mr Olympia competition - which is recognised as the sports most prestigious competiton.
