A knee-board is a surfboard fastened to the leg and ridden in a kneeling position. Knee-boards are ridden in ocean surf, or while being towed behind a boat on a lake or river.
Popularity
Today there are thousands of recreational and competitive knee-board skiers across the world. Most water sport schools include Knee boarding within their curriculum.
Location
Knee Boarding can be performed on any water where towed water sports or surfing are practised.
Age
Knee-boarding is suitable for a wide age range, starting from around 5 years of age.
Ability
A knee-board is a good piece of equipment to start out on for towed water sports, the low center of gravity makes it easier to get up on than a water-ski or wake-board, both of which require standing up.
Description
Knee-board surfers generally wear swim fins and catch the wave by paddling and kicking. Advantages to knee-boarding include an extremely low center of gravity, less wind resistance, the ability to ride higher and farther back in the tube, and taking off on a steeper part of the wave. Towed knee-boarding is an offshoot of knee-board surfing; knee-board athletes compete in slalom, tricks, and expression session events. Towed knee-boards have a padded deck contoured to the shape of the shins.
Potential
There are competitions for knee-boarding, but in the United Kingdom most enthusiasts are recreational only.
