Twinning is the act of twinning two communities (village, town or city) in an act of cultural exchange and friendship, leading to exchange visits and promoting personal friendships. Twinning is run by local twinning associations.

Popularity
Most local communities (village, town and city), throughout the United Kingdom are now twinned with at least one other community somewhere in the world, most commonly somewhere in Europe.

Location
Communities can and do, twin with locations anywhere in the world, where there is a community willing to twin with you. For the practical reason of frequent group travel, near Europe is the most popularly chosen destination.

Age
As a community activity, all ages are activly encouraged to participate.

This is an ideal activity for the whole family to take part in.

Sometimes there are organised exchange visits between particular age or interest groups.

Ability
As an activity involving the community, ability and means are not an issue, all of the community are welcome and encouraged to take part.

Description
Twinning is a community activity that promotes the sharing and exchanging of cultural activities, and the joining together for sporting events. Also exchange visits are organised between the two communities, in which families or individuals will be welcomed into the homes from the twinned community, allowing a better understanding of each others lifestyle and customs, as well as seeing the areas in which each other live. Many strong and long term friendships are thus established.

Potential
The potential to be gained from belonging to a twinning association, is the gaining of a fuller understanding of different cultures, and the making of personal friendships. The harmonizing of communities.
