A radio-controlled boat is a boat controlled remotely. And can either be, Sailboats which use the power of the wind acting on sails to propel the boat, Or engine powered boats. Both are typically controlled via a multi-channel radio transmitter.

Popularity
Sailing model radio controlled boats can be a relaxing hobby purely undertaken for leisure, or it can be a competitive activity of racing and manouverability contests.

Location
Lakes, ponds or areas of calm (still) water, These are often areas designated as boating lakes, to avoid conflict of interest with fishing and other water sports.

Age
Sailing model boats is a traditional hobby / activity, with a fascination for all ages.

Young children and non swimmers must ALWAYS be accompanied, preferably by a competent at swimming adult, who is alert to the presence of children at all times.

Ability
The basic ability to sale an engine propelled model boat under supervision takes only a few minutes. To fully control a radio controled sailing boat takes experiance, of the boat and of the weather conditions of the day. This is the sports facination

Description
Sailboats use the power of the wind acting on sails to propel the boat, they are controlled via a radio transmitter in the hands of the operator with a corresponding receiver in the boat. By changing the position of joysticks on the transmitter, signals are sent to the boat, the radio receiver is connected to electric motors. One controls the position of both main and jib sails together allowing the sails to be trimmed, the other the position of the rudder, allowing the boat to be steered.

Dedication
The racing of model sail boats is governed by the same ISAF (International Sailing Federation) Racing Rules of Sailing that are used for full sized crewed sailing boats (with the inclusion of Appendix E, that introduces special rules to govern the radio-controlled sport). Radio controlled racing boats are designed for maximum speed and maneuverability. Various syles of racing include circuits of different shapes laid out on the water with buoys.

Potential
A competitive offshoot of the radio control model warship hobby, involves combat, the firing of projectiles, usually propelled by gas, at opposing ships to sink or damage them. Models are usually much simplified in design to facilitate repair.

Closely Related Activities
Flying remotely controlled Planes 268, Racing remotely controlled Cars 384, Making Miniture Ships and Boats 392.

Cost
Costs are dependent on the style, detail and sophistication of the boat, and whether it is home made or purchased complete.

A simple mass produced radio controlled boat, of representational design can cost from as little £25. Whereas a home made to scale craft can cost more than a hundred pounds in parts and take many hundreds of devoted hours to complete.
