Modern Pankration is a mixed martial art sport that has taken the best techniques from a number of martial art and combat sports, and combined them into one. The sports incorporated include Western Boxing, Wrestling, Combat Judo and Muay Thai.

Popularity
Pankration has had an extraordinary revival in recent decades, and especially since the mid-1990s.This revival has come in the form of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
Some claim Pankration to be the fastest growing sport in the world, at this time.

Location
Although an ancient Olympic sport, at the time of the revival of the Olympic Games in1896, pankration was not reinstated. Pierre de Coubertain, the founder of the Modern Games, stated. "We accept all events to be reinstated, except pankration".

Description
Pankration, as practiced in historical antiquity, was an athletic event that combined techniques of both boxing and wrestling, as well as the additional element, of the kick. This creates a broad fighting sport very similar to today's mixed martial arts competitions. There is evidence that, although knockouts were common, most pankration competitions were probably decided on the ground where both striking and suand submission techniques would freely come into play.

Dedication
Pankratiasts were highly skilled grapplers and were extremely effective in applying a variety of takedowns, chokes, and punishing joint locks. Ancient pankration competitions were the closest an athletic event came to outright, no-rules, empty hand combat.

Modern Pankration is a combination of other Combative Sports such as Karate, Wrestling, Judo and Jiu-jitsu. Tournaments emphasize safety and sportsmanship, suitable for competitors from all styles of Martial Art.

Potential
Modern mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions have come to feature many of the same methods that were used in pankration competitions, but with more rules.
