Touch Rugby is a fast moving minimal contact, evasive ball game. Derived from Rugby League, Touch Rugby is similar to traditional rugby but without the tackling, scrumming, rucking, mauling, lineouts and kicking. And may be played by mixed sex teams.
Popularity
Touch Rugby is often played as a training activitiy for rugby league and rugby union; as a safer variant of rugby, and for this reason, is particularly popular in schools and junior clubs, and also as an informal social sport.
Location
Touch requirements are flexible;
Game duration 2 x 10 minute halves.
Size of the field can vary but the game is often played on half a rugby field (playing across the field). Posts are not required.
Teams consist of 8 players, plus substitutes.
Age
Touch Rugby is suitable for a wider age range than the more traditionally thought of Rugby games.
Touch Rugby is considered ideal for players of seven years of age, and upwards, (often played as a mixed sport in junior schools).
Ability
Touch Rugby is suitable for both beginners and experienced players, and can be played in either men's, women's or mixed divisions.
Touch Rugby is easy to learn and a great way to get in shape.
Description
The object of the game is for each team to score touchdowns and to prevent the opposition from scoring. The ball may be passed, knocked or handed between onside players of the attacking team who may in turn run or otherwise move with the ball in an attempt to gain territorial advantage and score.
Defending players prevent the attacking team from gaining a territorial advantage by touching the ball carrier. Either defending or attacking players may initiate the touch.
